Fausta Garavini

Fausta Garavini is an expert in French and Occitan literature. After studying with Gianfranco Contini at the Arts Faculty, University of Florence, she taught French literature at the same university. She was a friend and colleague of Anna Banti and has been on the editorial staff of the journal ‘Paragone’ since 1972. She has contributed essays and stories to a number of other journals, including "Nuovi Argomenti", "Revue d'histoire littéraire de la France" and "Littérature". Her scholarly works focus on the study of narrative and fiction in French literature; she edited a famous and impressive translation into modern Italian of Montaigne’s essays. In 1990 she won the first prize in the essay section of the Pisa national literature competition with her book Parigi e provincia (Paris and the Provinces). She has been made a doctor honoris causa of the University of Reims and the University of Montpellier for her critical work. As a writer of fiction she has been awarded the Mondello prize for the best work of fiction before 1979 with Gli occhi dei pavoni (The Eyes of the Peacocks). She was a finalist for the Viareggio prize with Diletta Costanza; also for the Bagutta prize and again the Viareggio prize with In nome dell'Imperatore (In the Name of the Emperor). She won the Vittorini prize for Diario delle solitudini (translated into English in 2014 by Jennifer Radice under the title The House of Solitudes). Her Storie di donne (Stories of Women), a finalist for the Bagutta, won the Cocito-Montà d'Alba prize. Her most recent novel, Le vite di Monsù Desiderio (The Lives of Mr Desiderio), won the Selezione Campiello prize in 2014 and the Manzoni prize. Also in 2014 Fausta Garavini was awarded the Tarquinia Cardarelli prize for history of literature and philology. Some of her books have been translated into French.
